May 2024:
Chairwoman’s 10th Anniversary Report.
How could it possibly be 10 years since Wyke Ladies Club started. Because we cannot be 10 years older, can we? Let’s look at all the things we have done over these years. Our programs have ranged from Laughing Yoga to Domestic Abuse. Meals paid for by the club to the Lobster Pot, Christmas parties with Ed Hintze and a mystery coach trip which really was a mystery as we could not see a thing because of the fog until we arrived at the pub in West Bay.
Coffee Mornings are always well attended with a different venue each month. Although some have let us back again. Once a year Carol hosts a fundraising coffee morning in her lovely penthouse studio overlooking the Fleet.
The social events are too numerous to detail so there is a list of events and also some pictures for members to look at. However, I must mention the train trips to Southampton and the many shows we have seen and the champagne lunch at my house where I found the home cooked ham still in my fridge after everybody had finished. An event I am not allowed to forget.
Members host Book, Scrabble and Walking clubs which are enjoyed by many members.
This year we still have talks on the Jurassic Coast, Postcards, Cycling without Age, lots of Hats to try on and look at from Snooks of Bridport and a demonstration of Christmas Wreaths. Plus, our coffee mornings and lots of different social events.
We look forward to many more years of fun, activity and friendship.
I would now like to introduce Liz Kirby who was the winner of our raffle on our return from Covid when she won the top prize of Who Gives a Crap Loo Rolls.
December 2022:
WYKE LADIES CLUB
2022 has seen Wyke Ladies Club have a splendid year even though speakers and events had to be cancelled at the last minute for a variety of reasons. Our programme planner Di has had a horrendous year trying to get replacements, but she has done a marvellous job.
On the first Monday of each month, we have a speaker, and this is just a selection. We started the year with Armchair Yoga, followed by The History of Handbags. We have had a flower demonstration by Jay who has a flower shop in Abbotsbury Road. Check out his web page for a look at some of his marvelous flower designs. We have learnt a lot about the rivers of Dorset from Bob Ayers, had a meal at Weymouth Golf club during a tremendous thunder and lightning storm and then a talk about Domestic Abuse not something you want to hear about, but this was informative and sensitively given and members learnt a lot. We finished our year on a high with mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies, singing and dancing to the marvellous Ed Hintze.
On the second Monday of the month, we have coffee at various venues from Bowleaze Cove to Portland and we have visited Pubs, Hotels, Garden Centre’s, members’ homes and the Sailing Academy together with coffee shops.
On the third Monday we have various social events that have taken us to the Nothe Fort, Dorchester Museum, a lavender farm at Shillingston (this on the hottest day of the year) and Langham Wine Estates for a tour and wine tasting. We have had a Cheese and Wine evening, Bingo and a Spooky Cocktail night and we finished with Christmas lunch at The Turks Head. We have also been to Cineworld to see two films. Downton Abbey and Mrs. Harris goes to Paris.
We also have a book club, scrabble club and a walking group.
We start 2023 with a talk and demonstration about life saving and how to use a defibrillator. Coffee at the Moonfleet Bowling Club and skittles at Wellworthy’s.
We hope that 2023 will be a kinder and less fraught year and wish all readers a Very Happy 2023.
FEBRUARY 2019:
Wyke Register, January 2019:
Our November meeting which was held on Bonfire night did not include fireworks, but our speaker provided stars and planets!
Babs Kirby – an astrologer who has written a book “Astrological Guide to Life” gave us an interesting and informative talk.
Our coffee morning at the Turks Head in Chickerell was well attended. The November social outing was a bus trip to Poole. Festivities in December started with our Xmas meeting. Mulled wine and mince pies got us in the mood for our entertainment. Ed Hintze with his keyboard played a lively selection of Christmas Carols and songs for us to sing along to with our word sheets. Then followed a break for the raffle (Brenda actually won a prize!) and the Heads or Tails game for which Pearl won the fruit hamper. The evening continued with most of us dancing to Ed’s repertoire of 60’s and 70’s music. Some good moves and plenty of laughter. What a lovely evening.
The next event was our Xmas carvery lunch at the Rembrandt. A good selection of meats and veg and some of us still had room for pudding!
We met at Nautico for our coffee morning, the last event before our next meeting in January.
